EXPERIENCE

Nicola has over 35 years of experience as a Nurse. She trained in the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries and Stoke Mandeville Spinal unit, in the South of England. She has worked on the acute as well as rehab wards for spinal injuries.

She is experienced in managing and completing clinical assessment of both spinal and brain injured clients as well as complex care to include physical functional difficulties, behavioural and cognitive issues.

Nicola is a certified District Nurse and has been delivering training and writing care plans and risk assessments for over 10 years in the community, in both England and Wales.

She has held the position of Clinical Lead for Complex Spinal Injuries and Mental Health / UK Care companies in the Northwest, Wales and the Midlands, London, and the Home Counties.

Nicola works closely with community mental health teams, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitian’s and speech and language therapists.  She has the skills, experience, and knowledge to empathise and understand the whole journey for any individual who has sustained a spinal cord injury. She has a caseload of clients in various places in the UK, assisting and mentoring them in their own homes, ensuring knowledge and teaching competencies are delivered to carers and nurses looking after her clients.

She has extensive knowledge teaching, recruiting, mentoring, and working with local health teams and has experience of CQC and CIW compliance.

Nicola has a wealth of experience using clear communication to liaise with the community multi-disciplinary teams (MDT’s) as well as hospital MDT professionals and co-ordinating with GP’s. She establishes clarity, so everyone can feel empowered and safe with competence, confidence, and clear goals in the home environment.

Nicola writes expert witness care reports and has a full understanding of the litigation process. Nicola has worked in A&E, triage, trauma and dressings, early assessment units, ITU, and as a nursing Sister in a Nursing EMI Home for Dementia. She has also worked within GP practices, running mother and baby clinics and various other clinics in primary care such as blood pressure or diabetic clinics.

PERSONAL PROFILE

Keeping fit and healthy is a large part of Nicola’s life as well as spending as much time as possible with her family. Nicola has travelled extensively and a few years ago, she was able to follow her passion and obtain a Diploma in Yoga Instruction. She has practiced Yoga all her life, so living in an ashram and learning to teach and meditate authentically has been such a joy. Meditation is an important part of her daily routine. When she trained as a spinal nurse, she taught some of her patients in their chairs.

Down time is spent either training for a marathon or walking in the hills with other friends or family or anything to do with music. Nicola has completed two London Marathon’s and a dozen half marathon’s raising funds for various charities. Her next Marathon will be for SIA and hopefully London again soon!
