EXPERIENCE

Kate has over 30 years’ experience of caring for patients both in hospital, in their own homes and in nursing homes and was a member of South West Thames Pilot Committee on Care within Community (Nurse Adviser).

With eight years of experience as a District Nursing Sister, Kate was responsible for a caseload of between 50 to 200 patients being cared for in their own homes aided by a team of Registered Nurses and Nursing Auxiliaries, which included both adults and children. She was responsible for appropriate referral to agencies and would then act as co-ordinator and facilitator as required, but remained accountable for professional nursing care provided.

In addition, Kate has nine years’ experience of caring for acutely ill, chronically ill and terminally ill, including palliative care patients within nursing home settings, as Nurse Manager and Director of Nursing.

Kate has specialist interests in catastrophic complex injuries to include brain and spinal injury and all community nursing/care issues. She also has experience of working within an intensive therapy unit, stabilising patients with severe neurological injuries prior to them being transferred to longer term rehabilitation units with the aim of them returning to live within their own homes with family members or supported by a specially recruited care team.

Three years of experience as a Health Claims Consultant for a Reinsurance Company has given Kate invaluable insight into technical claims handling and in implementing her recommendations for appropriate management of the clients in their own homes following and during the claims process. She was also pivotal in setting up a progress team lecturing and training throughout the insurance industry the value of early intervention to obtain best outcomes which eventually formed the basis of the Rehab Code.

Kate acted as Nursing Consultant and adviser to nursing homes and domiciliary agencies, and our own case managers, for whom she has developed a comprehensive training pathway, providing oversight to the more challenging and complex claims in order that all parties are kept fully informed of progress and need for intervention to obtain best outcomes in relation to independent functioning at all levels on a holistic basis. She develops policies and guidelines for care and management of patients both adult and children with a wide range of disabilities to include complex catastrophic injuries. Our clients range from walking wounded subtle brain injury clients, birth injuries to include Erbs palsy, amputees both upper and lower limbs, to high level ventilated spinal and/or brain injured clients requiring skilled nursing care and who are managed both in their own homes and as chosen in nursing home settings.

Kate is actively involved in case management and personal injury claims and has been instructed as an expert by claimants, defendants and on behalf of reinsurance companies, as well as joint instructions.

For the last nineteen years, Kate has been actively involved as a case manager for a number of catastrophically complex injured clients throughout the UK as well as within Europe, Hong Kong and Australia, setting up teams of staff, organising care plans/rehabilitative support programmes, appointing treating professionals and organising for appropriate aids and equipment.

Kate is a nurse adviser for community care issues and is co-director and owner of Community Case Management Services Ltd. She combines preparing reports with case managing clients. The practical experience is invaluable in assessing care costs, allowing her to be constantly updated in this regard by keeping abreast of changing needs and trends, taking into account differing cultures and expectations.

To date, Kate has prepared over 900 quantum reports and in excess of 950 case management reports. She has given oral evidence in the High Court during the last nineteen years, attended numerous case conferences and produced joint statements, assisting in bringing about settlement of claims.
